Hello all and hope the week is going well! I am in need of a new tower style muffler for my Atomic 4. It is on an Irwin 30 Competition. Any thoughts or feedback would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you Al!

Hi Al, truly appreciate the input! I saw that at the MM site but I am just not an exhaust guy. It is a different configuration from the originals so I am just not sure of the impact or compatibility before I send a good check over for the muffler.

Not sure if there is anyone out there who can comment. Here is better information on my current configuration. Thank you again. All input greatly appreciated.

Best-

This may help explain the principles of a standpipe exhaust system. Page 1 of the pdf covers a standpipe system, the type of exhaust you have.

I have a standpipe muffler that came with a used A4 I bought about 20 years ago. My boat has a water lift muffler, so I never needed it. I did use it to test an A4 rebuild in my garage about 7 years ago. It's been collecting dust since then. Pay the shipping and it's yours if you think it could work.

Just to put these unusual standpipe mufflers in perspective: Nothing was like what Ericson put in my boat so I had one made out of SS. $1500. gulp

I have a 1966 Morgan 34. In 1979 during the end of a bridge run for winter layup my steel standpipe blew a hole spraying water over the engine and stalling. I later made a new standpipe using a used compressed gas cansister tank - similar to a scuba air tank, from a forklift. Welded a pipe tube up the center with measured exit/entry ports etc. It is pretty heavy duty and still going strong. The tank mounts upside down and my only regreat is that I did not tap a drain plug at the bottom. Just presenting this as a future low cost option.

Hi Tim and thanks again!

Hi Tim,

Any idea what it would cost to ship? It might be a good option! I am in Grand Island, NY. Suburb of Buffalo, NY. Best-

Jeff M.

Of course, your accountant is someone you should never speak with when it comes to your boat, but I'm not sure mine would say stainless makes sense as opposed to a simpler approach at a third or half the price.

Lots of things are likely to fail before that shiny new stainless muffler goes, starting with the owner (or at least the owner's interests/abilities, etc).

YMMV.

Bill

Jeff,

It looks like it will be about $25 for UPS ground.
