    Exhaust wrap.

    .

The '74 Catalina 27 I recently bought has a new wet exhaust but it is not wrapped with insulation as I have seen in photos of other A-4s.

Is it necessary to wrap this pipe and if so why?

On my '73 Ericson 27 the exhaust pipe is wrapped from the engine to the device where exhaust and engine cooling water is mixed. However, from the mixing device (sometimes called an exhaust riser) to the outlet on the transom, it is not wrapped. This is because this pipe is carrying a mixture of water and exhaust that is significantly cooler than exhaust only. When I originally bought the boat (used) it had a PVC pipe to the transom. I recently changed this a a hi-temp rubber hose.
