Oil Pan Replacement

I have a crack on my oil pan and need a replacement. Will a pan I have sourced with a 1972 build date fit mine that has the serial number 171300. I didn’t see a build date on mine anywhere yet.

I think oil pans are interchangable. They are line bored to fit the rear bearing/seal and perhaps something at the fwd end. But there are a couple of dowel pins that may have to be re-reamed to suit. It won't be a direct swap, but I think it's certainly feasible.

Agree, should be interchangeable.

Thanks for the replies. Can this swap be done with the engine hoisted in the cabin?

To make it easier to get the engine out of the boat, I mounted it on an engine stand in the boat and then removed everything from the block. I don't recall the exact order of disassembly, but I do have notes and photos of the reassembly. I've attached one photo that may be helpful to you. It shows the drive train in place and the oil pan about to go on. (This is not the sequence described in the MMI overhaul manual, but it is what worked for me.)

Some cautions come to mind. One is that the oil pan is heavy. Another is that, like me, you may find heavy sludge at the bottom of the pan. If you rotate the engine to get better access to the pan, you may get sludge where you don't want it.

I hope some of this helps.

Jack.
