Proposal to increase ethanol

The EPA has before it a proposal from a lobbying group called Growth Energy in which 54 ethanol manufacturers have joined to increase the percentage of ethanol in gasoline from ten to fifteen percent. The proposal is now in a 30 day period of public comment which will close on May 21.

From what I have read about ethanol in gasoline in these posts and elsewhere, there is nothing good in this proposal for us Atomic 4 owners. Ethanol causes fuel separation and corrodes fuel tanks and fuel lines. We depend on our engines for our safety; we can't simply exit the vehicle and walk home if our engines fail a few miles from shore. We love our old boats and our old engines but regulations like the one in this proposal at best reduce the value of our boats and more likely force us to incur the otherwise unnecessary expense of replacing tanks and fuel lines, if not to find another means of propulsion altogether.

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) opposes this proposed regulation for these and lots of other reasons, most notably the absense of any testing on marine engines before the proposal was put forward, and the lack of any real benefit to the proposed regulation. Check out NMMA's website at http://nmma.org/ for more details and an opportunity to make your own public comment.

Mark, Thanks for that message..I am sending the data onto my club's forum as well...there aren't too many gasoline guys left, except for the powerboats the club operates and a few sailors with powerboats & my A-4!

I got this from Boat US...

Dear BoatUS Member:

We need your help!

Strong pro-ethanol advocates are pushing the Obama Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to increase ethanol levels in gasoline to 15% (E15). As you may have read in BoatUS Magazine, ethanol at the currently allowed 10% (E10) level has been shown to cause significant problems for some marine engines and boat fuel systems. To read more click here.

Higher levels of ethanol have not been tested in marine engine systems, and in fact may void marine engine warranties. BoatUS is part of a broad coalition of over 50 consumer, industry, and environmental organizations working to insure that science is part of the federal decision.

Specifically, we are asking that EPA deny the waiver requested by ethanol producers to increase the allowable ethanol level to 15% until unbiased testing demonstrates that higher blends would pose no threats to gasoline engines, public health, the environment, and consumers.

http://capwiz.com/nmma/issues/alert/?alertid=13199386 to send comments (due before May 21) directly to EPA.
It doesn’t have to take more than one minute. If you have a little more time and can customize your letter, it will make your message even stronger.

Please share this email with your boating family, friends, and groups. We need as many letters as possible.

Thank you,
Margaret Podlich, Vice President

The link in the previous post takes you to the NMMA website where a form letter in opposition to the E15 proposal is already set up and can be sent to the EPA. The form letter can be customized to suit the writer's particular needs or sent as is. We have a lot to lose under this proposal and we should jump on it with both feet. That BoatUS opposes the proposal is particularly significant as it is a consumer organization with no vested economic interest for or against the E15 proposal.

Not counting what ethanol does to the environement.
And it affects us lake boaters directly.
Ethanol is mostly obtain with corn distilation.
All those big nice feild of corn need tons of fertilizers wich end up une our lakes and rivers.
We now have nice green blue algeas in our lakes. Weeds grow at an incredible rate. They die off in fall and increase sedimentation at a fast rate.
