Mechanical Fuel Pump

Anybody interested in a mechanical fuel pump?

My PO installed an electric pump and left the mechanical in place but disconnected, means it's been operating dry. I'm sure it needs a rebuild but it's outside appearance is good. Priming lever flutters as it should when the engine is running.

Price - send me a Moyer fuel pump blanking plate with gasket and the mechanical pump is yours.

Lightbulb Trade?

Niel, I would like to trade you for it but I have an extra mechanical pump already. Have you ever delt with RS Marine in Wilmington on 22nd Street near the Cabrillo Marina? Jack may have a plate he would trade he still does some A-4 work in his shop. I have delt with him for many years and he is a good source of knowledge on the ole A-4's.

Hey, I have an extra plate but no gasket.
(It's brand new and purdy)

Shawn, can you source a gasket?

Oh yeah.
The one I have is the plate combined with the mounting bracket for the Facet pump.
And we all know why I have the spare plate...

Jerry, I was thinkin' you might be all over this mechanical pump for reasons that remain unstated.

Talking

Jerry - Stubborn is good. Still, once again Neil and I are coming to nearly the same conclusion (another scare), albeit from slightly different angles. It seems that the design characteristics of the Facet pump are showing their worst side in your installation and environment. I would not want to revert to a mechanical pump which I regard as passe' in this day and age. I can tell you that the Carter pump I use runs only to bring up and maintain specified pressure and is always cold to the touch. Check it out online. Regards, Hanley

To bring the stars back into alignment, that's not my conclusion at all.

I enjoy the side benefits of the electric pump (discussed elsewhere on this forum) and the Facet has been trouble free for me. It's also performed well for Jerry even at the discomforting temperatures he's experiencing.

I would have no problem reverting to the mechanical pump if necessary. They have a long history in the automotive field and as I've said before, the A4 designers were a pretty sharp bunch and if they used a mechanical pump . . , blah, blah, blah.

Exclamation Pumps are pumps???

Personally I have a mechanical pump and a rebuild kit in my ditty box of parts. The rebuild kik is in a box with an electric (pulse type) pump. Ah the best of both worlds(?) or just plain indecision. I have used both styles of pumps (and various electric designs) and have had good luck with both.

I have followed the "Hot Facet" thread a bit and wonder how there seems to be so much temp when so little energy is being used just to pump the fuel which should also cool the fuel pump. A few of the electric pumps I used were set up for a bypass back to the tank to maintain fuel injection preasures and they ran at about fuel temps or SLIGHTLY warmer. Niel what is the rating of your Carter pump and what type of pump is it? Also are you using a regulator for preassure?

I met Tom at the races yesterday. It was odd to talk our ole' flatheads with all the big block horsepower sitting around. The SS-7 is a clean looking beast and was doing quite well when I saw Tom. I got to listen to them all day while bonding in a bulkhead that was squeaking agains the headliner. Today I may install my new water pump cover that came with my new MMI coffee mug.

Niel, common and get the plate from Jerry and make a "ball-peen" gasket, I have a few installed on mine when the gaskets were not readily available.

Dave,

Actually, it's Hanley advocating the Carter pump. I have the Facet and I'm happy with it.

Regarding Jerry's plate, Shawn nibbled at my offer first so ethically I'll see that through before exploring other possibilities.

And finally, aah - ball peen gaskets. That takes me back to high school auto shop in the 60's.

Stupid question; I know a mechanical fuel pump will work without battery power...will an electric fuel pump also work without battery power?

Spoken For!!

The pump deal is done, spoken for, promised, over. I'm sure it's going to a good home.

Not exactly. The electric pump needs a 12 volt source. For most of us, that means a battery in the system. I expect someone will chime in (again) that once the engine is running, the battery can be disconnected and the alternator will provide the necessary power. NOT TRUE!! We should all be aware by now that disconnecting the battery while the engine is running risks spiking the alternator output and frying the internal diodes.

I suppose the electric pump could run off an independent 12 volt source like solar panels or a wind generator.
