Secondary Fuel Filter Recommendations?

I have a Racor filter/water separator installed as the primary filter, between the tank and the fuel pump. I have a late model A4 with a mechanical fuel pump.

I would like to install a secondary filter and I'm looking for suggestions on the type/brand and the location. I would think I need to place it between the pump and carb, but on my engine there at a short loop of copper tubing between the two. Putting a filter here requires either cutting the copper tube or changing the tube out and replacing the fittings. There is not much room between this side of the engine and the wall of the engine compartment.

It would be simpler to add it between the Racor and the pump. Is the vacuum produced by the pump sufficient to overcome the restriction of a 2nd filter?

Any suggestions are welcome.

MMI has a kit to do just what you are describing. I have the same set up and you can replace the copper tube with a flexible line. Check out the kit.

To answer your second question, I had a secondary fuel filter attached to my late model A4 with mech. fuel pump and it had no problem pulling from the tank thru the Racor & generic Fram metal 5 micron secondary filter. I even had a squeezy bulb on their for a while and it sucked fuel thru all of those restrictions.

I, too, had little space for the hose loop (from MMI) for the polishiing filter going from my mechanical fuel punp to the carb. There are two outlet ports on the mech fuel pump. The one that is not used is closed by a screw plug. I found that if I used the aft one--away from the flywheel, the loop angle was freer and took less space.

I have installed the MM kit between the mechanical fuel pump and the carb too. The first polishing filter I installed didn't last too long, less than a season, before it got plugged up. But, the subsequent filter has been going strong for 2 years now.

I suspect that you really don't want to move it between the Racor and fuel pump, especially if you have an original pump. Most of what that filter will pickup is crud thrown off from the mechanical fuel pump's sediment bowl.

Thanks for the help. I saw the filter i the catalog, but did not realize it was for the mechanical pump. I am ordering it today, and replacing my Racor element.

I bought the filter and installed it, but I still have some issues I am working through. My engine idles great, but will die when I open the throttle (unless I have the choke part way on).

Does it matter if the secondary filter, between the fuel pump and Carb, is above the pump and carb or do I need to place it below the pump and carb?

I do not think the location, above or below the carb/ pump makes any difference. We are talking inches here. At what RPM does she die? I believe the main jet kicks in around 1200 to 1300 RPM. Dieing at that RPM would indicate a blocked main jet. Dan S/V Marian Claire

Dave, I have to be careful (especially if the engine is not fully warmed up) not to let the engine stall when I try to get it going. It will usually shift into gear OK (at idle) but if I don't give it enough gas it tries to stall out. The choke does not always help this problem. I don't have a solution yet either..

How often should you change the secondary fuel filter? Mine is about 2 years old and I'm about to go on a week long cruise. I'm bringing a spare, but am thinking about leaving the old one on there as I have no problems at present. What the Racor primary? I change that about every 1.5 years.

Sounds lean to me, I would close the idle jet
