Leak in Manifold
Hi there,
I have an original Atomic 4 on my 1972 Tartan 34C. I have a small hole in the manifold (right on the "L" in Universal) and it is leaking steam. Looks like it was caused by corrosion. I have heard replacing the manifold can be tricky. Has anyone done this? How did it go? Has anyone tried using JB Weld for repairing this area? Does it hold? Thanks! |

The exhaust manifold is not difficult to replace if you have room to access it. Remove the carb. and exhaust flange and the three bolts that hold the manifold. If it worked, JB weld would only be a short term fix. Besides, if there is a hole corroded through the manifold, there is likely a lot more corrosion you just haven't seen yet.

It is only 3 bolts and it comes right off. The hardest part is probably getting the exhaust off it won't fit out with the riser still on.

The hole is the first place it has rusted through. Fix that one and the rest of the manifold is just as bad internally, ready to spring another leak.

I have had my manifold off on my T34. It is quite easy to do. There are just 3 nuts to remove besides the exhaust. You can even leave the carb on, just unhook it.
Separating the exhaust is the hardest part. I recommend buying MMI exhaust studs. You will need 2 new gaskets to replace the manifold. While you have it apart, you should adjust the valves. |

Pretty much. Time for a new manifold.
