Carb For Palmer P60 - Same as Atomic 4?

Hi All,

This is my first post and I apologize in advance as I am a novice trying to learn as I go. After some diagnostics on my 1974 Palmer P60 engine it was determined that the carb probably needed a good cleaning and maybe a rebuild. My usually reliable mechanic took the carb back to his shop to do the work. To make a long story short, he "lost" the carb so now I am in need of a new one (along with a new mechanic...).

I'm pretty sure the carb from my palmer is the same as the early model carbs from A4's. Looking through the online catelog I see that I can buy a new model carb but have to also purchase the carburetor flange kit (FCAR_13.2_166), scavenge tube (FCAR_13_60.0), and flame arrestor adapter (FCAR_08_59). S

So I have 3 questions.

1. Does anyone know if the Zenith carb (FCAR_01_53) will definitely work for my palmer? My palmer manual doesn't have model numbers.

2. How can I tell if I definitely need the adaptor items for a new carb? I do know that the old carb I lost definitely had a flame arrestor. That probably means I need it for the new one I order right?

3. I don't see the flame arrestor adapter (FCAR_08_59) listed in the catelog. Is this the same as FCAR_12_176.3 possibly?

Thanks in advance and I hope it is alright that I am posting here since I have a Palmer and not an A4.

Thumbs up Call the "Guru"

Brian, first welcome to the A-fourian forum. The basics are the same so all troubleshooting should also work for your Palmer too.

I'm guessing that your old carb was a cast iron body, true? If so I'd recomend calling GURU Ken at MMI as he could probably set you up with the right flange kit. The engines are close enogh in size so the carb will work just fine.

Note if you did indeed have the old cast type carb it had an internal scavange tube for marine use. If you go with one of the newer styles they have an external tube so deffinately get the scavange tube to hook into the manifold, not a big deal to do, but very important from a safety standpoint. The spark arrestor is a CG must.

Welcome.

If indeed the Palmer P-60 used the same early model carb as the A4 then the newer Zenith carb should fit on your engine.
I have an early (old) model block with the late (new) model carb on my A4.
Hard to say how it would work on a P-60, but why wouldn't it? They are both updraft carburetors.

I agree with Mr. Dave Neptune that you should call the parts expert, Ken at MMI.

The A4 and the P-60 are really not so dissimilar after all. We get inquiries on this board from P-60 owners on average once every year or two.
