Do you mean thru-hulls Mike? If yes, are they above or below the waterline?

I am wondering what the heck you are talking about. Can you be a little less vague.

But at least the ports are on the port side. That is how it got it name.

Since we are on this topic, I wonder how backside got its name. We dont say frontside, why do we say backside.

BTW, there are great guys here, and they will be a lot of help, I promise.

Mike,
welcome to the forum..we are gonna need a little more help..As you said, it sounds like lots of stuff has been added over the years, so it is hard for us to tell what you are talking about without some more details.

I have 4 thru-hulls on the port side, and none of them are for the bilge (pump, I presume)..the bilge pump hose goes out the transom, near the exhaust, on my boat.

Next question....are we talking above or below the waterline?

thru hull

Thank you for being patient with me I'm just trying to learn more about my boat not all of us were born sailors. And if I use the wrong terminology please excuse me. That goes to those with the smart as.. comment. This is my frist ever post and i do appreciate you help very much. Yes the thru hull is above the water line which their are 3 and 1 I know is for the bilge pump but cant figure out what the other 2 are for. I see clear hose connected to both of them but it disappears under the cockpit and from there I don't know. Thank you agian for you help.

Sounds to me like they might be cockpit or deck drains. Could it be that you have more than one bilge pump? My boat had two when I acquired it - each with its own separate discharge through-hull.

Alright Mike...now we are getting somewhere. I have a couple of holes in the boat above the water line too..two of them are vents..one for a water tank and the other for the holding tank. Usually the holding tank smells pretty bad so it is not usually the clear hose on those as they allow smells to permeate thru them easily. On holding tanks, you want the expensive white hose from a place like SeaLand or Trident that don't let smells thru.

if the hoses are clear, I would suspect vents of some sort. I would hope deck/cockpit drains, etc. would be double walled exhaust hose...but not always.

We'll help you get it sorted...pictures help..a lot! And sorry for being smart..you are right..we all gotta start somewhere.. Go back and check out my old posts...you'll get a good laugh!

Mike-
We like to try and be humorous when possible around here.
But (as I've shown quite a few times) what sounds hilarious in our heads doesn't always translate to words on a posting.

Good intentions all around though, I assure you.

I am still confused, but let be a little more serious, and possibly helpful.

It sounds like there are thru hull fittings. You dont know where they go?
I assume that t hey are above the water line. You can take a hose and squirt water into them. See were it comes out.

Likewise, with a bilge pump, you can run the pump, and see.

We love photos. It makes it so much easier.

Okay, Catalina 30, three thru-hulls above the waterline on the port side. On mine there is a single port side thru-hull visible right below the deck joint amidships. It's the holding tank vent.

My one and only bilge pump discharge is low on the transom.
Cockpit drains go through the hull above the waterline but under the stern counter, not visible.

Hang around here long enough and you'll certainly be helping others. It's happened before.

When you get around to posting pictures, resizing to a maximum dimension of 640 pixels will keep you in the good graces of the myopic membership.

Ooh, a veritable trifecta of alliteration:
posting pictures
good graces
myopic membership
