Well, the head is now back from the machine shop along with the manifold and few miscellaneous parts for cleaning. Total machine shop cost so far is $260 (including the crank work).

Ken and I had a long caucus today... but the Amish One have blessed my oil pump as being the on correct side of the bell curve of "good". So only the $83 testing fee.

... and the result of the caucus is I now have $2600ish of cool new parts heading my direction.

I'll post some pics of the painting tomorrow, with some suggestions.

    Foreshadowing: think "etching primer"

I've asking questions in a few other threads, but now have all the parts back from the machine shop. I forgot how tedious taping and painting is, but mostly all done now.

Now to let the paint fully cure, in parallel I get to start putting pistons, rings, wrist pins and rods together.

          Thanks!

With the other recent on-going 'bomb' threat, I did the only responsible thing... I painted it "Safety Red".

For the curious, attached are some of my notes I've been gleaming form the MMI overhaul manual plus thing to avoid. Pictures are stolen from Iloverust's overhaul thread... before the photos dropped offline. Drat!

I can't wait to see your notes. Where did you attached them?

Give me an example of a link to a missing image. I may be able to post a fix.

Here you go, starting at post #38. Most of ILoveRust's post after that have a pics reference to a photobucket URL like:

These images were stored elsewhere, so they were never available inside the MMI forum. Maybe Rust can help?

Yep. We have now determined the picture posting via URL is fraught with danger (in the reliable space).

Let me ping ILikeRust to see if he still has the pictures. He sold his boat with an A4.

Progress has been slow, but yesterday I got all the valves lapped.

Thanks... but I cheated a bit and used one of these.

It's handy because of the mechanical twisting back & forth if you hold the gizmo stationary with the drill running. Then you just loosen your grip for a moment to let the valve rotate a bit then tighten your grip to shift to the back & forth motion for lapping.

7 of the valves came out perfect on the first pass. One didn't have a uniform surface, it looked like two fine parallel rings on the valve surface. That one I did did a second time for about 30-40 secs and it became just like the others.
I switched hands on that valve, so I must have provided consistent pressure.

Also, you need to dip the valve stem in oil to lube the guide during the process.
                              Thanks,
