    Voltage Regulator

Can anyone recomend a suitable replacment Voltage Regulator? Mine was a Prestolite VSH 6201N, but it seems to be a tough part to source at a reasonable price up here in Canada..(shipping, taxes, exchange rate, etc..) Maybe a Napa PN or some other generic part?

Is this for the Motorola alternator that comes on the A4? If so, you can make a connection to the field and use any number of standalone regulators. Here is just one relatively cheap example:

Before you do anything, do you know for a fact the regulator is the issue? If you have the usual A4 35 or 50 amp Motorola, take the existing regulator off and add a test lead to the field wire. With the engine running, touch the test lead briefly to +12 volts. You will hear the engine load up and watch the battery voltage jump up if the alternator is good. If that does nothing, a new regulator isn't going to help.
    * warning - you are driving the alternator to full output with this test. Do not leave it this way, the resulting voltage will climb high enough to damage something sooner or later.

Also please be advised that if you go with an external regulator you'll need to keep the old disconnected regulator mounted on the alternator. It is a critical part of the ignition protection required of all alternators on gasoline powered boats.

THANKS - forgot to mention that, there are sparks in there potentially. So step 1 for this test is make sure there are no gas fumes!

In an effort to trace out an ignition issue I decided to remove the VR from the chain in the off chance it was sinking some current. In the process of trying to remove the wires, I noticed that terminal post was rotating with the nuts (it's heavily corroded) and thus ASSUMED that I had pooched it regardless. BTW I found one on Amazon for 30 bucks..
The only thing I know for a FACT is that I will probably break and screw up a few more things before I get my A4 back on her old legs..

            Photo?
I am not picturing what you mean unless this isn't a stock A4 alternator.

These are the photos I have on hand. Not sure which alternator this is.

That is not the alternator I am used to seeing. That wiring in general looks a mess, probably a fair amount to be done there.
