Sounds like an issue with the shift cable or it's adjustment.
Recommend to take the cover off the transmission (engine off) and see how the shifter stuff is moving. When shifting into fwd, you'll see the shifter cone moving aft. Do the pawls engage fully? They should snap into place in the groove in the cone.
When shifting into reverse, does the cone move fully forward? It should almost contact the fwd adjustment collar. If it doesn't, try backing off the reverse adjustment nut and see if it moves further.
A lot of shifting problems are due to the cable, its mounting, and its adjustment. The core of the cable has to move freely. The jacket of the cable has to be secure at each end.
