Atomic 4 parts and engine for sale

I acquired this motor with the goal of rebuilding it for my sailboat. Well, I no longer have the sailboat, but do have a basement full of Atomic4.

In the Annapolis area. Best offer. Pictures...

Response to 'motoring'

The plugs were a bit sooty. I will try to lean it out a bit as well as installing the new gasket and fuel 'screen' for the mechanical fuel pump.

I admit to being more interested in getting out...

Please let me know if you are in town. My racing days are basically limited to Wednesday night racing in Annapolis. With the two boys (10 + 4) there isn't much of a chance to go out and race on the...

Bow on which J/29?

Ok Shawn - this is really too small a world. I did bow on a J/29 back in the 90's. Which J/29 did you sail on? I was on 'Top's Optional' back with Rhumb Punch was a J/29 and Mirage and Jeopardy and...

This weekends motoring

I got the family out on the boat Friday night through Saturday. It was perfect weather and wind for an evening sail around Annapolis, then a short motor/sail up to a local restaurant.

The motor...

Great idea Shawn.

Re: 95% to 99% I think I am going to try the choke cable to see if I can fix my idle problem.

Re: People who 'lurk' around the site when in trouble then disappear - I am one of the guilty folks. I...

Check your fuel

As a victim of bad gas I would highly recommend checking your fuel. I had sticking intake valves (also caused by high exhaust back pressure, but my exhaust system is as clean as a carbon whistle)...

I hear ya brother!

I am also at about 95% on the engine after a year of trials and tribulations. The only issue I have now is that she will stall at idle unless the choke is on about 1/3 of the way. I have to idle...

Things to check with head off

Raw or freshwater cooled engine?
If Raw water: You can check the distance from the water ports to the edge of the block near the valves (between the valves and the edge of the block (they are oval)...

Congratulations on the new engine!

Congrats on getting the new engine on the boat. I was without a reliable engine for 1 year and it was quite distressing. I am starting to save a little bit of money to eventually put a shiny new...

Joe,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am much more comfortable with this engine after this past years experience and with all the kind words, advice and actual direct support from folks on the...

Strainer decision

I will end up putting a strainer on sooner or later. I will also incorporate Don's recommended external flush hose connection. I have a raw water cooled engine so my plan will be to put a hose...

Yesterday I installed the new scavenger tube and started emptying the internal fuel tank. While I was there I couldn't help but start the engine again (I am like a kid now that the engine actually...

Strainer - Kinda survey and question - Heavy duty or plastic?

I know it would be controversial to mention NOT having a strainer. I do plan on getting one. I should have made my post more of a question vs. a comment.

Question:
High quality (i.e. 2-3 boat...

Raw water filter (in the Chesapeake Bay)

For the past 10 years I have sailed my boat in the Annapolis area (9 more years of sailing other people's boats) and while I agree in principal about getting a raw water filter, I have to say that...

Sticking valves

I am very gun shy about any sticking valves due to my problem with bad gas. If it is just occasional, you might be able to put SeaFoam in the flame arrestor and maybe that will clean up the valves. I...

Adjustments to carb

Jerry - Here are the adjustments I have made since getting the gunk out of the engine:
1. We set the idle timing while in the slip and set her to 5 deg advanced timing at idle and even at higher RPM...

Sounds like a sticking valve

Shawn,
1. How do you get the engine to idle at 700 rpm? I stall if I idle at less than 1000 rpm. The timing is good and the mixture was set but less than 1000 she surges and runs rough then stalls....

Hey Steve, I have a slip in Annapolis

I may be going to Herold Harbor for a race at the end of the month. Can't believe how many Ches. Bay A4's there are!

The engine appears to have recovered from the 'varnish' incident brought on by bad gas. I ran her yesterday on our way out to the Wednesday night races in Annapolis (check out www.annapolisyc.org to...

I guess I shouldn't be asking this already (after my problems getting my engine running again after some bad gas) but are there any suggestions on getting the A4 to idle down around 800 rpm? After a...

The spring goes down.

The flat part should raise up and block off the water coming into the therm. housing if working properly.

Don't use the fuel in the tank! Use an external tank

As someone who just went through a year of pain due to bad gas (or most likely, 33+ years of bad gas released from the tank by using solvents and the new Ethenol gas) - don't just run what is in the...

Jerry - You are brilliant! No, I didn't consider the fact that maybe I needed to get rid of the old flange. I thought I could just put this inline with the original flange. In hindsight, you hit the...
