Since happened with 2 engines, is there any possibility that this could have been cause by too much cranking and the water intake was open?

Lots of good brands out there like Faria-Beede or Seastar. I have had a Faria gauge for 5 yrs and no issues... but then I sail on fresh water only...

I don't boat in salt water but I've heard about this happening in head systems whereby the salt water (and associated organisms) sit in the bowl/hoses and breakdown and rot causing the smell

I found the narrow nuts from the donor engine and used them. All the head nuts are currently sitting at 20ftlbs since I have to remove the thermostat housing at some point soon to paint and add hose...
