Small Gas Tank

This is a re-post of a prior:

Years ago I decided to not worry about stale gas and condensation. I drained the onboard gas tank that holds about 30 gallons. Then, I got a sturdy five gallon gas...

Fresh Water Contrarian

I guess that I am always the contrarian around here. Let's face it, many A4s with raw water cooing have been around for almost fifty years and survived just fine. I like things simple. Adding FWC...

Be Happy

If you are getting to hull speed at 2100 rpm, why worry. Boats will not power much if any beyond hull speed anyway. I suspect that you cannot get more rpms only because your boat is moving hull...

Time to Fix Rather than Replace

Instead of $500 including shipping I would do all possible to repair. Stainless steel bold and bushing? I would look hard at repair before plunking down that amount of cash.

Relocate Choke Control

I had a similar problem, but solved it by simply relocating the choke control from the panel where originally installed. I moved it inside a lazarette that provided straight cable run to the carb. ...

Flushing

Sorry to disagree. I installed a T fitting in the water intake line many years ago. I feed this with a "pressurized garden hose" regularly, but I have installed a garden hose screw-on valve (about...

Perfect! Flooded Carb

Good job with sharp eyes. My experience is that a flooded carb due to float, or in your case needle valve/seat will snuff out an engine just as you described.

Arcing

I would go to auto store and buy some high voltage wire, maybe slightly larger gauge than you have now. Then simply make new wires with brass connectors and replace the arcing ones. Electrical...

My vote

I suspect that the float is flooding out the carb.

Internal siphon tube

Right, the "siphon" tube is internal and is a "pick up" tube extending to the bottom of the gas can. I used a piece of 1/4inch copper, soldered onto the fitting that I installed in the top of the...

What Not to take aboard

Good discussion about tools. How about what NOTto take? For starters: kids in diapers, dogs, cats, wife and girlfriend (simultaneously), people with hangovers. Further suggestions?

Tools and Supplies

With all of the stuff suggested, be sure to get an "Ace Hardware" sign to hang on the outside of your boat. Then you can make a little money selling stuff whenever you get dockside! :)

Check your Water Line

After loading all of stuff recommended, check your sheer strip around the boat as she probably will be sitting low in the water. But, simply reduce your passengers by two and you will be OK! ...

Shaft Coupling

I would not worry about "the next time" too much. It is clear from your photo that you have a stainless shaft, so I would recondition as you have done, reassemble, and let the next guy worry about...

Crabber's Tip

My boat in Savannah, probably among the worst fouling areas in the country. I have used Trinidad Red bottom paint on hull, shaft and wheel. Two zincs on shaft at all times. An old crabber told me...

but I cannot understand the reason to replace a fixed wheel with a folding prop. The ads will say you might get .25 knot or so speed increase, but I want the comfort of a working propulsion when...

Tapping out Broken Studs

While rebuilding my A4, I had a number of bolts/studs break off. I was about to haul everything to the dump when my neighbor stopped over to look. He got a small (1/8 inch) cold chisel and hammer,...

Prop Removal

I wedge a 2x4 cutoff between a blade of the propeller and the hull and this has worked fine. You can see where to put it in your photo. Your shaft is probably a bronze shaft, perhaps stainless, so...

Perhaps I am missing something, but the shaft on my boat (and I suspect all others) is already grounded to the engine. The entire shaft passes through the stuffing box, directly to the engine and...

To SteveM,

Thanks for info on GFI, as I don't know much about them.

Ground Wire

If I understand, you have only a single outlet for 110v. However, it certainly should connected to shore power connector by a three wire, grounded wire. Copper (or green) wire is ground, white wire...
