And more data...

The tank is about 9+ inches deep, but the tank was 3/4 full when the problems started, so this may not be the source of the soft shutdown problem. It might be that the fracture occurred where the...

More data...

The part shown above attaches to the bottom end of what looks like a generic Moeller fuel pick up tube, about 8" long, which seems to be in good working order.

The black tubing that broke does...

Replacement fuel tank pick up line source

My late model A4 quit four times yesterday after running about two hours, and would not restart after the fourth try. I suspect fuel starvation. Starting at the source in the fuel tank, I noticed...

Thanks, Al. You're right, it must be an oil pan flange and not the block. I feel better about that. If I can find a way to remove the bottom bolt of the old pump, I'll install the replacement and the...

The side plate rusted through a couple of years ago. Photo attached. I had to drill out almost all of the studs so I could get the new MMI plate and new studs in. I manually cleaned out the block and...

Engine block too corroded?

I'm in the process of trying to replace my leaky old Oberdorfer water pump on my late model, raw water cooled, A4. The aft portion of the block has been shedding LOTS of rust onto the bottom of the...

Cannot remove the starter :(

I'm trying to remove the starter so I can access the forward drain port in the engine block, but the starter/solenoid assembly will not come off. I removed the two bolts on the flange easily enough,...

Found a clog!

Before doing any flushing, I wanted to take baseline measurements of how much water was coming out of the pump, through the block post-thermostat, and post-manifold. She failed the first test. I...

RWC not FWC

My big mistake. My engine is RAW water cooled, not fresh water cooled. I have wet dreams about FWC.

Overheats and don’t know why

I have a 1982 boat with a late model A4, FWC, Vetus Aqualift muffler. Running at 1000 RPM the temp is 185. At 1500 RPM the temp goes to 195, and the Temp light goes on. It’s the same problem I had...

Did that one.

Yep, I checked inside the thermostat housing last night. Lots of black crud. I rinsed it all out and scrubbed the housing and the thermostat with a toothbrush to get everything out.

I could blow air, but could still be blocked?

Great thought, Neil. I was able to blow into the hose coming off the thermostat exit, but there could still be debris in there that restricts water flow. I ran a long screwdriver into the exhaust...

What is the difference between the diverter and tee fitting?

I am tackling my cooling water issues this week on my RWC late model engine. What's the difference between the diverter and the tee fitting? Is the diverter a valve? Can it be cleaned out?

No water in the fuel, and loosening the gas cap doesn't improve running

I started it up today and the ragged running starts within a few seconds. I removed the gas cap while it was running poorly, and that did not improve the engine, so I don't think it's the vent.

I...
