Thumbs up 7 years later after my "Diesel Vs Gas" post - All's well

I was trolling around the web and ran across my original 2004 "Diesel Vs Gas" post and still retain my original opinion. I own the same 1972 Ericson 35 with the same A-4 and I can happily report it's...

Oil Change

I have an Ericson 35 with an A-4 (obviosuly, why else would I be here?).

Since my engine sits at an angle (10-15 degrees?), it tends to pool the oil in the aft part of the pan while at rest. I...

Slipping PCV hose

Paul,

have you tried a small hose clamp? I think that's what I have on mine and almost certain it came with the kit, and if not, I added one as I like things attached not just slipped on. Small...

Dripless packing

Take note, when the fine print is read on the "Dripless" packing it clearly states "it is not drip free"...... just more expensive. I did the PYI drip free gland and very happy with it on me 'ol 1972...

Pump Bolts and other bolts

I can't say enough about putting some kind of anti-sieze like material on the water pump bolts or any other bolts that are exposed to saltwater and/or harsh environs.

I presonally use Duralac,...

The filter needs to be installed between the engine and fuel tank (i.e. suction side). Be sure to check flow rates of filter, although an A-4 flow rate is not that great. Install it in a place where...

Wrapping Exhaust

Pop open the yellow pages, you'll be surprised what you'll find (insulation, etc.). Especially look/call a local truck repair/parts or diesel shop (Caterpillar, etc.) they usually wrap turbo pipes...

Carbo repair

I think you may be on the right track if all the above suggestions have been checked. I had a case of 'stumbling' at various RPMs and tracked it down to the carbo. I kid you not, it was a 60 minute...

Flapper valves

Another consideration is a flapper valve on the outer hull/exaust exit point . Although not the greatest solution, it is certainly an easy one and not all that expensive. Or simply raise the outlet...

Oil in bilge

S.Lining,

have you tried cleaning the bilge as good as possible and placing a few 3M oil sorb matts underneath to see if you can spot any places where it's dripping? Could be multiple spots, loose...

Sailnet A-4 site

Kelly,

My experience with the Sailnet A-4 site was testing my patience. There were EXCESSIVE discussions for example into the minutiae of how a diode worked, occasional flame wars, upwards of 50...

gas Vs.Diesel

Having worked on everything from 5,000 HP MTU diesels down to the 30 hp A-4's I can say the A-4 is a pleasure to work on as long as you have decent access. I think most complaints form anti-A-4 folks...

Noise location technique

A stethescope is of first choice, otherwise a small diamtere rubber hose (1/4"?) is a poor man's alternative. Also, using your fingers on various sections of the engine helps too. Might be able to...

Blue Smoke

Blue smoke usually indicates oil being burned in the combustion chamber. Have you tried a compression check? Also, old gas smokes pretty bad now-a-days. I gues the aqdditives and what ever goes into...

Distrubuter issue

tkandziora,

Sounds odd, maybe cheap brand of tune up parts supsectable to rust in the marine environment. I did not have your EXACT problem, but had rust and crud in the timing advance mechanism...

repower or not to repower

I agree with littlemac. A repower is not a drop it in and go task. Think of the new control mounting, the new engine mounts, a return fuel line fitting in the fuel tank, new wiring, new fuel lines,...

Raw water cooled or fresh?

Niether of you mention if you are raw water cooled or dual system cooled (raw and fresh).

Several ideas come to mind:

1. I had an issue with overheating due to an occasionally blocked exhaust...

Indigo Crankcase kit

I agree, the Indigo crankcase ventilator kit is a good adit. I had some obnoxious fumes in my Ericson 35 cabin after running the ol A-4 for a while and the Indigo kit cured that 98%. Good investment...
