The JB Weld will hold it in place. (See pics)

There is a very high probability of needing to start your engine.
I can think of other reasons for closing it... but not...

Hmmm, the 30 hours steady running before this started seems telling.
As Ed says it may be dirt in the carb "recycling" and clogging/unclogging the jet.

You could easily do a "quick clean" on it...
