Having trouble setting timing on early A4

The problem is rotating the distributor .... I've loosened the 'fork' clamp, but the distributor still does not budge. This is an early model ('67) ... is there a secondary hold that needs loosening...

Is this good practice or are there real regulations? I wonder why a box is needed for a bomb proof steel pressure container anyway. The real risk is the hosing and other downstream attachments.

i certainly have wondered myself, Ken at moyer has seen only rare failures. The machine shop guy (who "uses to work on a4s ages ago" said tnere was no sign of oil starvation and thought just metal...

Follow up

Embarrassed follow up. Getting down to work on the shaft it turns out that the 'groove' was actually a deposit left by the melted rope.

Follow up

Replaced crank, changes rings because it was convenient... new main, rod and piston bearings. Thanks again to Ken (moyer parts) for a lot of advice. Couple hundred hours latter and all is well.
