Dave, about 1300 RPM and that appears to be limited by fuel.

The current theory on failure suggests that there had been saltwater leakage from the side clean out plate fasteners which weakened...

Atomic 4 with 3 Cylinders?

I have been coaching a new A4 owner as he has been navigating his way down the ICW. It all started with him not being able to make more than about 3 knots and he contacted me to see if there was...

Dirty Fuel

Pitching in big waves brings to mind stirring up muck lying in the bottom of your fuel tank. Take a look at your in line fuel filter and also drain the carb bowl and see what comes out. If there is...

I do not get your point.

I concur that you get greater vertical force from a fine thread stud than from a coarse thread stud for the same amount of torque applied to the nut.

The issue that...

Get the small nuts or sacrifice a socket by grinding it down to fit. The thermostat housing studs are head studs just like all of the others except a little longer. Using a socket head capscrew is...

Rick,

The thought just occurred to me that since you have a C&C32, was it perhaps built in Canada? For many years a "de-tuned" version of the Atomic 4 known as the "Stevedore" was sold in Canada....

Rick,

It sounds like the pitch of your Indigo Prop is too low, maybe down in the 6 range. That is about the only thing that would explain its poor performance. The only other thing that would...

Rick,

I forgot to ask, what RPM were you seeing when your boat was making 4.5 knots ahead? Also, was the Indigo prop clean at that time?

Rick,

I see from my records that you had Indigo Prop S/N 1474 on a C&C 30. Indigo props are installed on nearly 60 C&C 30s with no reports of the issues you have outlined.

With your 25 ft...

Higher RPM

There are two main reasons to achieve higher WOT engine RPM with your direct drive Atomic 4.

The first has to do with increasing cruise RPM to somewhere around 2000. Many A4s in the fleet are...

Rough Seas?

DonC,
You indicated in you initial post that you did a good deal of motor sailing due to wind and waves and time constraint on the day prior to your starting issue. I had a similar incident many...

Boat Speed

What speed is the boat making at WOT? Typically, over-propped direct drive A4s will get a boat up to hull speed but the RPM will be in the range you are finding. Such a setup is hard on the engine...

You certainly need to check your engine to prop shaft alignment as a first step. Assuming that a blade(s) of the prop were not damaged during the splashing process, one other thought comes to mind...

Your current prop must have a pitch on the order of 10-12 inches based on your reported boat speed of 5 kts at 1000 RPM. Most likely your WOT RPM is only 1200-1300 RPM. That is way too much pitch...

Indigo Prop for Sure

That is indeed an indigo prop, no question about it. And it is 10” in diameter.

You should try taking the shift linkage loose from the engine and see if the lever on the engine will go farther in...

Make sure the spark plugs are fully torqued. If too loose, they will not transfer heat to the head properly.

Have you per chance removed the needle valve seat? If so, did you replace the gasket between the valve seat and the carb body? My experience with that gasket is that it is good for one use only....

Proper Torque on plugs

A spark plug that is not properly seated will have less heat transfer to or from the head. A poorly seated plug will run hotter than a properly seated plug. An easy check.

Fuel pressure and gravity move the needle down and the float lifts it up to shut off fuel and modulate the level of fuel in the bowl of the carburetor. Some carbs do have a little wire clip that I...

Since I have had no negative feedback from other Tartan 27 owners with the Indigo prop, I can only assume that the clearance you have from the deadwood is sufficient.

You should hand dress the...

Propeller Deterioration

The pitting you see on the prop is the result of Galvanic Activity. Since you do not have a zinc on the shaft, the prop is the sacrificial element. That is the concept behind the Indigo "No...

I think there was at least one little glass tubular fuse on the PCB but I cannot say for sure.
