How does the hand crank work?
 

In my boat that I bought about 15 months ago I found a hand crank. Thought it was an old rolling reef crank but I saw a quick entry somewhere online about a hand crank. After looking closer at the crank, I think what I have is a hand crank for the A4.

How does this work? Do you have to remove the flywheel cover? Don't think I would want to do this unless in a real jam, but I would like to know how to use it should that ever happen.

In combination with forward and reverse I find having a hand crank
very handy for clearing a line that has become wrapped around
the prop.

I've heard that in absence of crank a socket wrench would do? If so what size?
In my case there's a cover over the flywheel but a hole where I suppose the crank would attach.

I use a spark plug socket with two slots about 1 inch long 180 degrees apart. It fits over the roll pin in the fly wheel "hole". Admittedly I have never needed to hand crank for starting but it sure comes in handy for finding TDC and setting points.
