hole behind camshaft sprocket

Folks, I'm rebuilding an atomic four that was stored for several years after being partially assembled. I've been following the manual. I have the pistons and crankshaft in, the crankcase oil pan in. As I'm putting the camshaft in, I notice that there's a hole behind the sprocket. It doesn't appear to have been tapped, and it has evidence of being painted. Is there something that needs to go into that hole, or is it there to allow oil to pass from the block over to the transmission housing?

There are some oil galley plugs throughout the engine, they are threaded and use NPT plugs. There are also galleys that return and move unpressurized oil around to keep the trans oiled and oil flowing back to the pump. If not threaded it is probably the latter.

I no longer have a MMI Manual so I can't look it up to be sure. It looks to me to be an oil source for the gears, just not sure.

Thanks Dave! That's what it looks like to me, too.
