Engine passage question

1 Attachment(s)
Hi all. I'm attempting to refurb a CL A4 purchase. One task is removing a good amount of rust debris in the block. Per a4 manual, ive been able to excavate and open passages via coat hanger/welding rods. One passage has me puzzled, however. Its in the flywheel end, starboard side of the motor under the starter. might anyone know where this passage should lead? Seems lower than the cylinder cooland area, but doesn't seem oil related either. Pic attached. Thanks much for any assist.

That is the forward drain port.

Thanks much. The digging resumes...

Curious why you saw fit to paint the surfaces of the cylinders?
More important, I recommend you install studs in those 8 holes for the jacket cover plate. This will eliminate a leak path from the water jacket. Those bolts are known leakers. Moyer sells a kit for this, but if you can get a foot of 5/16 all-thread, you can make your own studs then seat them in the block with JB Weld. Use stainless nuts and washers to reinstall the cover plate.
