Does the oil on the dipstick look milky? If it is, get it changed quickly. Use cheap oil because you're going to want to change it again (maybe twice)
Take your time and eliminate potential causes...

I too have the Tartan 30 and with the prop so far forward of the rudder we don't get the advantage of being able to do the "back and fill" technique that you'll read about because the forward burst...

When I went to work on mine it was on the hard in the winter with no source of water so I couldn't even start it until things warmed up...
