Fixed

Thank you for your replies...always helps me get into a diagnostic frame of mind rather than "try this", "try that".

Pulled a plug and saw there was a spark when cranking, so assumed a fuel issue....

heat

Not sure about your exact situation, but in general heating the hose before pushing it onto a fitting works wonders. Holding the hose in hot water for a minute or two is best: a heat gun is my second...

Location?

Wondering where you mounted the HX? On our Tartan 27 I put it in the starboard sail locker.

Don't forget to keep an eye on the HX pencil zinc - had quite a hassle replacing mine after neglecting...

move on?

No disrespect, but my impression is that you don't want to learn how to keep these old engines running and instead want it all fixed and reliable as a kitchen appliance.

Galiano?

Hey Mel,

Did you consider keeping your boat in Montague? When we lived in Kits we put a mooring down in Montague Harbour, and that worked great for us. Cost $2000 all in, which we recouped when we...

zinc oxide

If you want to get serious about priming use yellow zinc oxide (aka "cold galvanizing").

Degrease with solvent, immediately spray with brake cleaner, dry only with compressed air. Do not touch...

Coil on bulkhead with heatsink

Hey Mel,

Sure was hot here on Bowen yesterday too! I can imagine that 2000 RPM for 11 hours generated some serious heat in the engine compartment.

We did move our coil to the bulkhead when we...

Hey Mel,

I just noticed you are in Richmond. Greetings from Bowen Island!

engine pull

If you do need to pull the A4, be absolutely sure the output coupling is completely disengaged from the shaft before lifting! For me, a bent shaft was quite expensive and time-consuming to replace.

stirred up?

I agree with the above, and wonder if stalling under load is after a rough sea? If so could have to do with stirred up sediment.

Happy Canada Day!

I had similar symptoms a couple years ago. Turned out to be an air leak around the carb. Its like not having the choke closed.

Sorry for your troubles...

Not saying it is impossible to fix, but I think the odds are against you.

Having gone to great lengths in an unsuccessful repair attempt on a similar, smaller crack, I would look for a "good...

T27 Hull 342 centerboard

This spring we discovered our board had fallen off after almost 50 years. I'd say that's pretty good service. But a bummer! Wallet ectomy ensued.

We hauled out to assess and found the 1/2 ss pin...

I sympathize: been there. Your engine access looks great, so I believe you'll succeed.

One tactic I found helpful was banging on the bottom of the thermostat housing to help get her started....
