Shop that did the work called them carbide. I didn't ask for the certs. I think you're right, they were probably just 1050 - same stuff I used for runners on my ice boats.

That lifting bracket only picks up two head studs. If used for lifting, it puts a heavy prying load on the head. I (and others) modified the bracket to pick up a third stud (welded on a piece).
In short, your head may be cracked. Remove the bracket and see what you see. Any attempt to seal the...Last edited by Al Schober; Yesterday, 07:27 PM.

The rear oil seal is a replaceable item. If it's flinging oil into the engine cover, it's time.
Water on the sole is likely from the side plate. Originals are carbon steel and do corrode through. You can do a temporary patch, but our host sells a nice stainless one. If your plate is secured...

Hanley's drop rate is for the engine running. If it's dripping with the engine stopped, you should tighten the packing a bit. I wouldn't get too crazy about the corrosion.
Also, you need another clamp. Two holding the hose to the stuffing box and two holding to the shaft tube. I put the clamps...

You'll need a valve spring compressor to get the valves out.- Looks like a C-clamp. A compressor for an overhead valve engine is totally different.
Each valve has two keepers and a spring plate. Compress...

Peter,
Since Dave has gone quiet (NOT a good sign) I thought I'd stick in my 2 cents.
If there's water in the cylinders, adding MMO will do nothing. It will just float on top of the water. Draining the block and manifold will not affect the injection water, which has apparently gotten into...

Not sure that $20K is high. There's a LOT of labor in painting the deck with all the masking and sanding between coats.
Spraying LP is for the pros. You need the boat in a controlled environment and probably two people for the spraying, both with respirators fed from outside air. The stuff...
