    Overheating issue-
On 3 hour run, the temp gauge (usually shows 160F ) started climbing, eventually went to 240, engine ran normally, top of T-stat housing was cool to the touch, no steam out of the exhaust (lake water temp 50F), but engine smelled like it was running hot. Temp gauge/ sender were replaced a few years ago- anyone know the resistance value of the sender at the cold end, about 160, and the high end?
I plan to pull the T-stat, but it looks original. I've been soaking the bolts with liquid wrench, but they don't budge. I don't want to snap off the studs-any thoughts on how much leverage/other steps I want to apply before I'm in the danger zone? If I can get it off, I'll soak it in white vinegar and check/replace it-maybe flush the whole motor. Motor is original 1974 A-4, fresh water, had the exhaust off last year to be rebuilt after finding water in the oil, ran fine after that; they didn't notice any huge amount of crud when the system was apart.
