Shaft Coupling Inner Coupling will not come apart of outer coupling

Hello,

I am removing my prop shaft and I can not for the life of me get the inner and outer part of the coupling to come apart. All 4 bolts are removed and the shaft keys are removed. I can see the hairline seem that connects the two halfs of the coupling but they will not come apart. Any tips on getting these two apart?

I have tried going around the edge with a chisel and have tried knocking the shaft aft by lightly hammering the prop. Last thing I can think of is heat but I do not like torching things inside a gas engine bilge.

For the most part a chisel is not a sharp enough edge. I have had pretty good luck using a "thin blade" stainless steel kitchen knife, usually a small one like for paring. Be sure the knife is parallel to the halves and strike lightly. The sharper edge will have much more wedge power for separating the halves. Rotate around the outside and tap lightly and slowly increase the tapping pressure as you work around the coupling.

Clean off the rust with a wire brush so you can see the halves better and start the smacking when you can see a good spot to start.

I have also used a Hyde brand thick blade putty knife as the blade is one piece all the way through the handle for hammering lightly.

Don't use heat unless you are also replacing the seals which will be ruined by the heat of a torch.

Well Oceanside is where I started from. Been cruising Mexico 2 years and now at the top of the Sea of cortez at Cabrales boat yard.
