Oil change question

It's time for an oil change.

I use the West Marine 6qt. vacuum sucker. I typically snake the suction tube down into the dipstick tube, but I am not satisfied with the amount of old oil that I am recovering. I think my boat sits a bit "bow down" and most of the oil is further forward of the dipstick tube.

Do I need the Moyer oil change kit: KTAS_05_90 in order to use the oil pan port near the fuel pump or can I safely remove the bolt from the port and snake the vacuum sucker tube down into the oil pan without the kit?

I plan to buy the kit, I'm just strapped for cash right now, and I'd like to change the oil soon.

Works fine

Ajax, if the engine's head is parallel with the water line or sloped down at all at the trans end the dip stick hole is fine. I snake a piece of curved 1/4" copper tubing around inside te dip stick hole and that's it. Worked well for over thirty years now. And yes you can remove the plug and work from there too, not much to gain though!!!

Ajax, Last winter I bought that same WM vacuum pump on one of their super Friday deals..mine is still in the box as I bought it after I'd already winterized. How do you like it? I plan to use it this year for sure, as I think I've put almost 75 hours on the motor.

Another option is to crack open the reversing gear cover, but I know on your boat, that is kinda hard with the access you don't have.

If you can get anything over 3 quarts, you're winning!

edit - speak of the devil, that pump is on sale again today only at WM for fantastic Friday! http://www.westmarine.com/p/11047123

I have the same pump. I think it works great. It comes with a narrow tube extension that fits down the dipstick hole. I can usually get around 3.25 quarts, just pump it a couple times and wait for it to fill up. Takes about 4 or 5 minutes. Took a couple of times to get used to but I can now easily change my oil with no drips or mess.

If you're worried about more oil being out of reach I think the curved copper tubing idea would work well. I've done something similar to drain bad gas out of my gas tank.

Me2 Or3

The pump I use came with a plastic inlet tube. It never seemed to work right. What I think was happening was the cheap plastic tube was curling around inside the transmission. I never had any "feel" where the tube was inside the tranny.
I went to a copper tube as Dave N. described on the end of the inlet line. It works well. And I have some "feel" where the end of the tube is. I sawed an "X" across the bottom of the tube to help the draw.
I can get three quarts of oil out this way.

TRUE GRIT

I have one of those extractors. I love it and use it on cars and airplanes as well as the A4.

The WM oil vacuum works a treat as others have said.

Ok, I didn't know that 3 quarts was "winning". I thought I should be able to get 5 quarts.

It depends which way your engine is tilted. Normally (transmission end down at 15 degrees on my boat) the plastic tube or the Moyer kit will only pull oil from mid-pan. Depending on your blind straw capabilities, there may be another quart or more towards the back.

Do you have access to the front oil drain? Lower front oil pan under the starter. If you lean forward as you describe, then plumbing in a fitting there might be a good idea.
