You better take a closer look before you buy. That sail is an old cross cut made around 1965 or so. That sail has seen much better years and looks like it has been cut down at least once. I understand the proceeds benefit a charity, but you can find a much better sail. Try Craig's List were they sail a lot.

If it's truly a Catalina 30 sail, that model was introduced in 1974. As for age alone, my 77 C-30 came with a cruising spinnaker of unknown age. It may have been new (VERY doubtful) or it could have been as old as 1977. Regardless, it's in like new condition - absolutely beautiful - so my feeling is age alone isn't necessarily a deal breaker. Condition is an entirely different matter.

I'd say a used turtle in working condition is worth probably half the asking price which reduces the financial risk on the sail by 50% but I've been known to take a risk here and there. Life's an adventure.

edit:
In the listing they offer:
Quote:
We will refund full price minus actual shipping cost if not as represented.

Smile Thanks for the heads-up

My current A-Kite was cut from a perfectly good Spinnaker by the previous owner. A-Kites don't work well unless specifically built as such. Not that I fly one more that four or five times a year, but the the right construction makes things allot better.

Thanks for the advice Neil.

I'm not so sure I'd call it advice. Tom is advising about what he's seeing, I'm looking at a price for an $1800 package when new. If you believe the charity's assurance I'm seeing an opportunity with limited risk. It may turn out to be good for little more than a tarp.

Or...it might not even make a good tarp.
