clicking after rebuild

Greetings to all of you!! I have an issue with my a4, its in a 77 sabre 28 MKII. Over the winter I did the following:
removed the head,
cleaned the water ports
rebuild the carb with the kit from Moyer
rebuild the mech fuel pump with the kit from Moyer
had the alternator rebuilt
put on a new starter
new plugs, condenser, points rotor (points caped.020, plugs gaped .35)
water pump impella changed and remote oil gun added
water bypass rebuilt and flow control added
new port 4 exhaust valve
removed all valves, honed all ports, cleaned / polished valves
new gaskets all around
set timing.
added fuel polish filter and water intake filter
now when it runs there is a clatter like loose metal banging around, "ball bearings in a metal can" sound and it just doesnt sound right. I dont think I can upload a mpg file though so I am going to try and add a link to it. anybody have any ideas?

Hi,

You do not mention adjusting the lifters. Did you?

nope didnt check it, it was not clanging last year like this. I replaced one valve in #4 exhaust. all others were just cleaned and honed on its respective port. hmmmm Ill have to go out and pull the exhaust off this weekend and get each one to TDC and measure / adjust it. do you think that is what that clanging is??

All you have to do is remove the cover on the port side of the motor, I think you can do this with the manifold in place. Don't need to worry about TDC, just make sure each valve isn't in the process of lifting then slide a feeler gauge between the lifter and valve. I forget the specs. .010" for intake and .012" for exhaust maybe? Its in the Moyer manual, or I'm sure you can find the specs on this site. Adjustment is easy peasy.
