The stop at Deep Creek also offers low prices on cases of oil at that Auto Zone. There is kerosene available across the bridge at the filling station. The Mexican restaurant is good too. For a very quiet free dock try the "Elizabeth's Dock" between the lock and the bridge.

Just an update
Since repenting of my "straight weight" mentality and switching to 15w-40 I have been enjoying steadier oil pressure and less oil loss. FWIW

Nice to hear 15w40 working well.
So it seems 15w40 is working well for you Hanley....cool. I found the same results but I didn't want to push it too hard on the forum here as it is not my forum. You've used your engine consistently for the trip from the Vineyard to Florida...and now heading back, so it's nice to hear that it's working for you and a motor that is punching a few miles

The only concern for me is whether that oil has the friction modifiers that will mess up the wet clutch. I'm assuming you made sure the oil you're using doesn't contain those?
And if so, care to share exactly what brand you've found to work so well?

15w40 ... I like it.
I didn't see Rotella on the shelf on this side of the border (Canada) but the Walmart brand is supplied by Esso here (Mobil)...I had good results with it. Most oils we buy these days are good and I often wonder if we would see much difference between them given the limited amount of use on some of these engines.
I find mine runs quieter, and I didn't have to add between changes last year. The longest I ran the engine steady was 6 1/2 hours a couple of times and it didn't use any during that period. I change the oil every 20 to 25 hrs but I don't have a filter system on there. For those of you that might have to motor for extended amounts of time to get home I'd really recommend it. I've been using it for about 5 years and all good!!

Since beginning to run the Rotella 15w-40 I have not had to add oil between changes at 100 hour intervals. I have the filter/cooler full flow system.

hmmm. . .
I put 20w50 Autozone brand in mine thinking it would up the oil pressure. . .pressure now is same as with the 30w that came out, so I'm assuming it is gauge/sender related. . . Motor runs fine, no new noises, and maybe less noise than before. That could be attributed to it just running better though and having been freshly aligned. I have noticed in reverse, it doesn't seem to be grabbing like I remember. . .not sure if that's oil related or if I need to adjust the reverse band. . . I will give the Rotella 15w40 next time I change it |

Speaking of oil...
Has anyone noticed the steady increase in price across the board for oil? Yesterday I paid $3.79/qt for straight 30w detergent (for the Gravely, not the A4).

Up from $10 to around $12 for oil in the past couple of years. Oil has weight so I imagine it cost's more to have the semis haul it to the end user...in the end we pay more. Here in Canada grocery prices are hiking almost every week. Trucking costs are the said reason although gouging is a big part of it.

Mo, How much oil is that for $10? I thought the price of oil was falling.

The price of "oil" for the consumer never falls as fast as it does for the oil companies. How would they continue to earn record profits if they ever passed on savings to the consumer.???.
One gallon of 15w-40 Rotella T is $13.32 today at my local Walmart. I can buy it in 5 gallon buckets too! If I want to spend more money on an identical product I can turn one traffic light earlier and pay $17.99 at my local "Auto Boutique" (Autozone) as Hanley likes to call them.

About $12 / gallon of oil Hanley....I buy the jugs. Change my oil and the remained is the top up if I need it. Like you, I haven't had to use it between changes.

Hanley, I guess that's the price you pay for living in a remote outpost like the Vineyard.

Shawn, Yeah I just kicked my rate up to $65/hr: I've taken the hit for rising oil prices for 4 years now.

Just to ad my 2 cents.. this was also my concern.
The previous owner used Valvoline 10W30 in the A4... clutch slipped a lot. If you opened up the throttle while cruising the engine would eventually rev up and you'd go nowhere as the clutch slipped away. It also popped out of reverse. I went with Mobil 1 10W40 motorcycle oil... no friction modifiers. No more clutch slip. My only issue is a lower oil pressure, which I questioned in another thread here. Now that I know there's an adjustment, and I now know where, I'm going to crank it up a touch. The engine is quieter, and doesn't slip out of reverse now and also will speed up going forward when I open the throttle. I have read about others with slipping clutches and popping out of reverse and then I read about the oil they use and I suspect this is why. I also note here people whining about the cost of oil when you bought a sailboat. Spend thousands on a boat then cheap out on the oil. Duh.!!

The way the reverse band is, and no detent device for reverse,
you sometimes need to keep pressure on the shifter to stay in reverse, it's not nessecarily the oils fault. Also your adjustments will have alot to do with that, just as the foward slip you noticed, tighten it one more notch.

When I put the old girl in either forward or reverse now it never pops out. It just stays there.
It shifts better, runs better, good pressure. (I explained in another thread I found a leaking tube which gave me lower pressure.. fixed) Quote:

briefly -- since i've discussed in another thread....
the best cure for slippage is adjustment -- just did mine [c&c30 also] and no more slippage.....yay! also re. motor oil to use: here's a pretty good url for some real info: http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/ [no i don't work for them]
