Stuck lifters

Am looking to purchase a boat with a '75 A4. It was rebuild 10-03 short of main bearings:ring set, rod bearing set, valve springs billed. After apparent lay-up, in 11-05, the head was removed to free stuck valve. Also stuck Carb. float. After replacement of head, mechanic notes "Stuck Lifters." Are the stuck lifters likely to free up with use? Is lay-up for 2 yrs. after rebuild sufficient to result in other internal faults?

It appears to me that the engine wasn't prepared for the lay-up very well and a little moisture caused the sticking of the valves that you're describing. The engine should "heal" very well with continued use and from adding Marvel Mystery Oil (MM0) to the fuel (8 ounces per 10 gallons).

The engine would also benefit from putting 5 or 6 squirts of MMO into each cylinder the first several times you use the engine (trying to aim the MMO away from the manifold side of the engine). This would tend to free up any rings that may be a bit corroded from the lay-up.
