spares + threads

Thanks, Neil, for both answers.

I guess I am a pants and suspenders person after all, so will leave the alt on the boat. (along with spare carb, fuel pump and pieces needed to change from electric FWC back to mechanical RWC if the electric pump dies.)

tips on assessing a block?

My old A4 is in the boat and running well so far, but in my shop I have my beautifully painted cracked block A4 with new head and manifold and all the goodies. So, I'm in the market for a "new" block, with plans to get an excellent spare A4 ready to go. Any tips on assessing a block would be greatly appreciated.

Talking

After all you've been thru I think you know how to examine the face of a block to check for cracks around the studs and cooling passages. That's really the critical part of the examination since it should be a given that you will be re-sleeving. When you go to buy the old engine make them let you pull the head first or no deal.
