New Rings?

Greetings to all A-4 owners-
I recently did a compression check on my A-4 (Vintage 1967), and found 30# in Cyl. 1 & 2; and 120# in 3 & 4. Upon removing the head, I found an 1/8" section of head gasket missing between 1 & 2. Upon further inspection I found the valves in need of grinding. The rod end cap bearings checked out with .002 clearances as did the Main bearings. The internal surfaces of the motor looked very clean. The cylinder walls appear to have the original milling marks visible , with no scoring or scratches.
My question is, should I change out the rings & hone the cylinders just for drill, or utilize the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach?
Thanx,
G

Smile New rings

Hi Greg,
I am answering mainly because I hate to see a new member's question go without a response. It creates a wrong impression of a forum membership that is totally incorrect. This is a great place to get answers about your A4.

If I were in your shoes and had the pistons out on the bench already, I would go ahead and replace the rings and hone the cylinders. If I had not removed the pistons from the block, I would leave them in place and call it good. Especially with 120# in 3 & 4.

Welcome aboard and good luck.

Mike

Greg-
I completely agree with Mike...
While you're "in there" do as much as you can. Nothing like peace of mind.

And another hearty welcome aboard!
