Farewell, it's been great!
Dear friends,
After 4 years of great fun and learning the innards of the A-4 (as far as valve spring replacement in boat with head on working upside down), it is time for me to move on. I originally bought the Catalina 27 to learn how to sail, and ended up earning a PhD in engine marine mechanics! I just purchased a 1999 Catalina 36 mkII with Universal diesel. It's a wonderful boat (huge!) and the engine is in very good shape, with only 400 hours on it. Original engine paint is still shiny. The next owner of my C-27 will be advised to come here and learn his lessons. Q: Is there a similar help group for the Universal diesel? -Rick Powers Last edited by rpowers; 07-19-2011 at 10:59 AM. |

Farewell and adieu to ye, fair Afourian,
Farewell and adieu to ye Afourian of yore For you've received a new engine for your brand-new sailboat And perhaps we shall never more see you no more. Godspeed and fair winds! |

Many thanks, Cap'n. Don also owned a C36, and he loved it dearly. I wish you the same. Take care, Bill Last edited by Administrator; 07-20-2011 at 07:13 AM. |

Rick, fair winds and enjoy the new boat. If the diesel goes out you could slide in a A-4 very easily.
There is a group that a friend of mine checked out, although he said it wasn't real active like this one. Adu Dave Neptune |

Back around 2000 my wife and I were in SanDiego and just for fun checked out a new Cat 36. Sweet!
If you keep your avatar and post on places like Cruiser's Forum, We'll see you along the way. Just don't forget the little engine that could. Cheers, Russ

Rick-
There are two 36 mkII's in our marina. I covet them every time I see them! Beautiful vessel. Congrats and enjoy her! We should also thank you for letting us know you're moving on instead of just dropping out. It's nice to "graduate" another A4 student from Don's wonderful school...

So long Rick. You've contributed a lot here.
I think you will find that everything you learned by working on your old A4 will serve you well with your newer Universal diesel. I did some minor work on a friends M25 or 35 (Atomic) diesel and was surprised to see an Oberdorfer raw water pump attached to it. Of course that sucker had a second pump for the closed cooling water circuit with a HX. You will learn new skills: how to bleed your fuel line after replacing your filters, cleaning injectors, using glow plugs if you've got 'em. You are off to a good start. Congrats on the new boat. |

Best wishes Rick, hope to see you on the Bay one day.
My dock neighbor has a Cat 36 and we swap tools now and then. It's a sweet boat. He's done a ton of upgrades to her where one day I'll catch up to him. I went from a Cat 27 to a C&C 36 and for a tiny while she was "BIG" to me too. Soon you'll feel right at home driving the 36 with no problems. Happy Sailing! ~/)~~

Rick...I spend some time over on the SBO forum (sailboatowners.com) - there are a mix of folks over there, like any forum...but it is a good source for Catalina info. I usually ignore the "general" area and only keep an eye on the Catalina section.
cheers and congrats!

Well, Rick et al, congrats on your new boat. I must confess that I sold my C&C 33 MKI a couple of months ago. I will have to be a boat charterer for a few years now as I have a newborn daughter - hence, prompting the sale of my beloved boat. As we all know, to keep the good 'ol boats beautiful we have to spend at least as much time on maintenance tasks as we do sailing (probably more!). My daughter doesn't appear to enjoy watching me tinker around with stuff very much and likes the attention to be all on her. So, even though I don't have the 'ol A4 anymore, I still think the PhD in A4 repair I earned by necessity should be put to use by helping other folks who are now in the position of having a complete lack of knowledge about this great engine (the position I was in!) by checking out and contributing to this forum every once in a while. I really did fall for that little engine and came to enjoy working on it. I, however, am one to love a learning experience and that A4 provided me with one. So, when you feel inclined, don't hesitate to come on over the this great forum and offer a helping hand to some A4 folks in need. Cheers!

How Do You Tell The Men From The Boys?
By the size of their toys.
Congrats on your new command. I went the opposite way this summer and had the old girl painted. Now I am married to her till death do us part. After spending that kind of money I'm locked in, A4 and all. Figure (hope) I can handle anything that comes down the road, old boat and all. TRUE GRIT |

Awsome Tom, just awesome!
Will she join the Coasties too? .....and then she gets too big to fetch lost tools down in the nasty bilge and I have to fend for myself. I love to watch her grow up, but I am vexed to see her grown up. Pretty cool when you first turn the tiller over to them eh? Mine got the steely look of a privateer in her eyes and was unwilling to give back the helm. Fine. I just went below—till she saw another boat DAAAAD!! Lots to look forward to Kurt. R.

My daughter is a US Sailing Certified Level I instructor...She's not so much interested in the helm of the big boat (although perfectly capable) - but she likes to trim the spinnaker & do the grunt work. She was teaching her Uncle how to sail the Catalina when the family was in town a few weeks ago..much more patient than myself. I sat on the bow pulpit and just shined listening to her teach. She's also definitely better at maneuvering small power boats than me with the dinghy instruction, etc.
She's spent plenty of time cleaning and handing tools and learning about boats. Same with cars..she almost knows as much about her Honda as I do now..I had her upside down under the dashboard changing the ignition switch in the spring time & we did the starter & belts & changed the oil as well. Rick..sorry this has turned into a 'gloating daughter' thread..I think the theme is that there is nothing wrong with a female learning and doing the same nasty things as males. Enjoy the new boat!
