deposits in the water jackets
After removing the head on our A4 we found the water jackets looked to be clogged with some sort of deposits. Is this normal? Yes we still have raw water cooling. Is there a solution to break up these unwanted deposits?
We also noticed we were running without a thermostat. Makes me think the previous owner took it out for a reason. Should I be worried about this? Thanks! |

Deposits in the water jackets
Time for an engine acid flush.

Deposits in the water jackets
Do a "search" with the words "acid engine flush" in the Moyer GUEST LOG category and you will get the info.

I would break up as many of the deposits as possible using a small screwdriver and then follow through with Simon's suggestion of an acid flush after reinstalling the head.

cleaning water jackets
[QUOTE=Don Moyer;2053]I would break up as many of the deposits as possible using a small screwdriver and then follow through with Simon's suggestion of an acid flush after reinstalling the head.
Don, Moments before I started the winterizing process I developed a leak in the water jacket. I removed the corroded plate and now am looking at a lot of crud and blackish water. I'd like to do a flush but I'm thinking I should clean out before replacing the water jacket. Any recommendations? Also, was trying to remove the thermostat and got the nuts off (kind of hard to get a wrench or socket on them) and the front is loose on the stud but the rear is frozen. Any suggestions? Thanks, Tom

Tom,
With respect to the stuck thermostat housing, you're on the right track. You just need to continue patiently soaking, tapping, prying; soaking, tapping, prying, etc., etc., until the rear stud releases its hold on the thermostat housing. You can flush out as much crud as possible while the water jacket side plate is off, but it's quite messy onboard the boat. Much of the crud can be flushed out after you have everything back together. Don |

Thermostat Housing Nut
Soaking, pounding, prying, etc. all winter failed to loosen the nut on the aft housing stud. Much advice from the Sailnet A4 forum led to the ultimate. I cut the nut with a Dremel tool. This turned out to be easy. You have to be careful not to injure the threads on the stud, however.
