leaking at manifold connection to exhaust pipe
Guy who put my engine back in boat made a paper gasket. It's leaking. How should I seal it up?

Use an exhaust flange gasket. It is mad of material that won't burn out. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and flat when installing.
Our host has them I believe. Dave Neptune |

Does that means the material for this gasket differs from others due to the heat factor? Is there any danger of running the engine for short periods with this leak?

Yes and yes. It's an exhaust leak into your engine/living space... carbon monoxide.

all good
I now understand. Received and installed gasket. Quite clear that size and material differs significantly from other gaskets. Had to tighten it down very hard, but now all is well.

PR,
As to the guy who put the engine back in your boat, DON'T call him again. You now know more than he does! Oh yeah, advise your friends not to call him either. |

You can have people sleeping in an enclosed space with a running engine. This bozo could have killed someone |

I saw this too. Makes me think the mating surfaces are not exactly square or the threads are in poor shape. It's possible the bolts are tight but the gasket is not adequately compressed. Keep your eye on this. Be sure it doesn't blow another gasket soon.
One thing for sure: It will be tough to get them loose the next time. Studs are a good idea. TRUE GRIT |
