Oil in Water Jacket?
I replaced my water jacke side plate last weekend after my plate rusted through and I had a jet of water shooting across the engine compartment. Thankfully, someone over the last 35 years used stainless bolts and anti-seize-Bless em for that. Everything went well, but I was concerned to see the inside of the cooling block was black with a greasy soot. Is this normal? The engine runs fine, compression seems OK and there's no evidence of water in the oil. Could I have a blown head gasket? The stuff looked like crude oil residue mixed with soot. Not much crude floating about here in Hawaii..

Aloha!
It sounds like you're ok if you're sure there isn't any water in the oil. (IMHO)
There could be a lot of explanations for some oil residue getting in there that are not a cause for worry. One of which could simply be it was too long since those passages were cleaned last... BTW, where are you in Hawaii? (I'm from Kahala and my 1st Mate is from Kailua)

The primordial black soup slime in our water jackets is normal. Maybe like the microorganisms found at mid ocean black smokers. It stinks and will stain your hands. Cast iron + stagnant salt water + heat = black slime goo bacteria.

Stinkola
In a post a while back I observed during my first acid flush that the effluent emanating from the exhaust was jet black dusted with orange rust flakes and the sewery stench was unmistakably organic.

Ditto
cellnav,
It is far, far more likeky for water to find it's way into the oil passages than for oil to work it's way into the water works. The possible minor exception is if you were to extremely over lubricate the grease fitting on the water pump which does ultimately lead to some grease in the water passages. Tom |

Thanks guys. I'll sleep a bit better knowing I won't be doing more engine work for a bit..
