It's alive!

My new engine was fired up for the first time last night after days of rewiring and replumbing suspect old systems.

At first it would only run with full choke, ran only at high RPM even at idle throttle, and ran rough

I was reaching my arm down to the carb when my arm got sucked onto the manifold Seems I left the bung out of the vacuum port when putting the PCV valve on. It works much better with the port plugged

I'll put up some more photos, but here is a part-finished photo of the fuel and oil filter setup.

Question

Joe, I am about 98% done with the oil filter install myself. I'd be interested to know how yours went & any "gotchas" or helpful tips to dial in the oil pressure, however, Tom's instructions seemed pretty thorough.

I am waiting right now to get 12v back to the engine so I can spin the starter and pop out the old oil pressure ball (I can't spin it fast enough with the hand crank..I tried. ) ..everything else is done.

1 - Take your time. Read everything 3 times over and test fit everything. You want to be able to change the filter without dropping oil all over.

2 - Remember to wire a ground for the assembly or any senders you put on it won't work.

3 - The ball comes out right away. Make sure you see it come out or you will be cranking a lot of oil out for no reason. Don't ask

Dial in oil pressure

One "feature" I noticed on dialing-in the oil pressure.

The oil pressure is regulated by TWO allen set screws. The first one sets the initial setting and the second one secures it in place.

The problem is that the second set screw changes the setting of the first screw slightly, but enough.

I found myself setting the first screw a little "loose" then the second screw tightens it down to the final setting.

Takes a few times to get it right where you want it, but I am very happy with it's ability to very "finely" regulate the oil pressure. Much better than the metal ball system.

Oh yes, AND there is an oil filter unit attached too...

PS- For removing the old ball, I used a magnetic "retriever" tool. Worked great, no oil mess.

Thanks Joe,

Can you dial-in the oil pressure setting on the Indigo system while the engine is running? I do not have the instructions here at work with me..Last week, I went to install the kit, and the instructions were no where to be found, so now I don't dare take my second copy off the boat!!

Yes, while running

Hi Shawn,

YES, the coolest thing about the Indigo regulator is that you can (and should!) adjust it while the engine is running.

You can tweak it to your heart's desire and barely a drop of oil weeps past the allen screw.

Again, it takes a couple of iterations to get it just right, but then it is rock solid.

Have you actually pulled out the oil pressure screw yet? When I did mine, I found it had the old-style style regulator, which looks like a cone-tipped shaft. It's easily removable by grasping the end of the shaft.

Apparently, the old style regulator gives more even pressure control, and Don has taken to fitting them to all his rebuilds now.

Ed, yes..I have pulled the screw & the spring came out, but not the ball. I have had it out in the past to clean it up and try to help regulate my oil pressure problems..I definitely have the 'late model style' & almost considered buying the seat dressing tool & the older style regulator, but got the filter kit instead. Maybe kill two birds with one stone.

This time, I just don't have any juice wired in the boat to turn the starter.

One of those small batteries in a case with jumper cables might help?

joe..sorry to hijack your thread. I tried again yesterday, and 3-4 seconds of hand cranking moved the pesky ball to the edge where I could see it, so I pushed her back in and another 6-7 seconds freed her.

For those of us with external oil pressure adjusters (including the Indigo), here is another suggestion: next time you have the engine out and the oil pan off take a few minutes to drill and tap the oil dump port on the block. This is a lot better than the "two block" procedure in the Indigo instructions.

Bold rascal, great idea. I am a little thick... - at least I was smart enough to pull the spark plugs and squirt some MMO into the cylinders, so they got an MMO treatment!

Rick, will do.

Hanley, if I ever get an engine to rebuild, I will do so. I am sure once the oil pan is off, this would all make a lot more sense to those of us that have never seen the internals.
