As long as I don't attempt any flights over the Arctic Circle, I should be fine!

Seriously, the A4 is such a robust little engine and it tends to give me ample warning of any serious issue. Still, the most likely cause of trouble for me would be electrical - I'm still running original points and condenser ignition and some of the wiring is original from 1979! ("if it ain't broke.....")
In terms of safety I carry plenty of spares aboard and know how to replace things, but I suppose if I follow the Colonels advice I could look into one of those nice inductor-type ignition systems....Now you've got me thinking!

When I acquired my A4, my first instinct was to replace the points and condenser, along with spark plugs, at the beginning of each season. They probably would last longer, but it's such an easy and inexpensive thing to do, it seems a no-brainer. I used to do this as regular tuneup work on my old Opel GT when I was a teenager. But once I started looking through this website, I realized that the electronic ignition simply eliminates the need for points and a condenser. I installed it, and haven't had to think about it since.

Well.........

No real expert here but.... some ole salts have told me they can always get a set of points to work for a while with a little sand paper but if the new fangled little electric box gets zappped or mysteriously stops doing what ever it does.....Keep a spare electronic thingamabob (or two) handy. I still stick to the old points. After all it has worked for 30 years on the 77 Islander. NM
