You'll be shocked by how much improvement will take place in the engine compartment after an hour and a half with some hot water and a LOT of degreaser. Replace those wood stringers, straighten out some of the plumbing bits that need to be replaced, slap on two coats of Bilgecote...good to go.

As for the engine, well, paraphrasing Winston Churchill, I'd say this is not the end. Nor is it the beginning of the end. But it is the end of the beginning.

I took a scraper and a shop vac to the engine compartment first...removed 7 gallons of muck (full capacity of the shop vac). The engine stringers are surprisingly solid and well bonded to the hull. The steel angle irons on top are in good shape as well. I'm going to epoxy bond the stringers back together and paint.

Got a little bit done this weekend. Replaced the rear engine seal that's been leaking forever.

I used the Moyer tool to secure the shaft

and then I used a breaker bar with two foot pounds of force (bounced on it with two feet) to remove the nut

I used a harmonic balancer puller to remove the flange

the surface that rides in the seal is chewed up pretty badly. I'll have to decide whether I want a new flange or a sleeve to repair the flange.

replaced the gaskets behind the bearing plate and the seal plate, replaced the seal itself, and buttoned it up with the exception of the new flange.

Here's an update on the progress so far in the form of some before and after shots:

I swear that "Oldsmobile Bronze" paint from KBS looked darker on the internet! It's more like dog vomit beige.

I plan to put the engine back to bed next weekend. That'll give the epoxy paint a week to cure.

Some of the compensatory work that needed to get done this weekend:

I had to grind off the heads of the aft starboard (under the water pump) motor mount bolts to get the motor out last month. So yesterday I re-drilled and tapped the holes for new 5/16 bolts.

When I tried to pull the oil sender off I snapped the brass nipple off flush with the block. I tried to use a pipe extractor to no avail, so I re-drilled the hole and tapped the residual brass out of the hole. Gonna have to do a couple extra oil flush/changes on commissioning.

I got my new output flange from Moyer and installed it using the handy-dandy Moyer installation tool.

notice that I placed a bolt from the harmonic balancer puller in the output flange to keep the engine from turning during installation.

Neil hooked me up with a source for a new clevis for my shifter cable, but it didn't arrive at the house till yesterday. I did remove the old clevis and brought it home to compare. I'll need to put my shift lever on a major grinder diet to get the new clevis to fit.

I'll do the grinding next weekend before I slide the engine back in.

That's the oil dipstick extension kit available exclusively from Moyer Marine! I just hadn't inserted the dipstick yet...nor the manifold...nor the carb...nor the alternator...etc.
