Annapolis Sailboat Show

Anyone going to the Annapolis Sailboat show next week? Maybe we can stage another East Coast Meeting!

I would love to, but we're doing a family camping trip. I'll be out in the Rappahannock River in a Carolina Skiff - or sitting by the campfire with a beer.

Hi Ed..we are going on Friday. I always stop by the Good Old Boat Booth and renew my subscription and get a back issue CD -

Then I wander around and drool over all the cool stuff I can't afford.

Otherwise, I be upstairs at Pusser's having an adult beverage.

I'll be there with the Admiral on Friday, too. I'm not an A-fourian any more, but you might find me at the Bavaria Yachts station.

I can't make it Friday, so it'll either be Thurs (to avoid some of the crowds) or Saturday.

Pussers will certainly be one of my stops!

We got to the boat show today. Don't know about boats, but people seemed to be buying everything else.

The mood seemed to be upbeat and lacking the lookers with the baby carriages and three or four unruly kids tagging along behind which I have seen in the past. Tomorrow could be different, though.

Lots of neat electronics stuff. Ten times as many catamarans as in the past (wonder why?). Lots and lots of charter operations, too.

The European boats don't do it for me. In fact, most new boats, regardless of origin, don't do it for me.

Shawn, I looked for you, but didn't see you.

Other reactions?

I wonder if I can get Don to go there next year.

Bill

Was Ken there too? He didn't return my call!

4 day weekend I'm guessing.

Thumbs up

Bill, We just returned home.... I bought something all the way at the NW extreme of the show (Breeze Booster tent) - to renewing my subscription at the Good Old Boat Tent (E extreme, near Catalina's area) & me and Laura bought some gear at the Quantum booth (know the local sailmaker) & discontinued foulies at the Slam tent & in one of the big tents selling Henri Lloyd stuff...and we looked at all the Catamarans, the Beneteau 34 & 37 (my buddy likes it) and we had lunch on deck at Pusser's!

I would agree..all the peeps seemed to be buying stuff.

We were there! Sorry we missed you!

At least we get to try the Breeze Booster on the boat this weekend...I am tired of the complicated setup of the WindScoop.

Ed, good luck! You know the deal on 99% of the boats about shoes, but I found it interesting (and refreshing)that the "Shannon" boats wanted you to keep your shoes on. Most others had the dumb "shoe area" around all the boats.

I doubt it. If you can't get Ken, you can always call Brenda at 410-810-8921 (or you may get Don). Her voice is perhaps not as mellifluous (or however you spell that word), but she's equally knowledgeable and a whole lot nicer to look at.

Show

Hey, if any of you are going and see the Quickline booth stop and say HOWDY to my good friend Randy. It would probably shock him a bit, a good thing! He and his wife actually have "I know Dave Neptune personally" hoodies. It's a long story and a big suprise to me. Enjoy the show!

Well, I went to show on Saturday, and the crowding wasn't as bad as I expected. Quite tolerable.

I set a personal record, spending over $2000 in the first 20 minutes! I scored a pair of unused Andersen 46st stainless winches for $985 each! They list for about $2200! After that, everything was gravy!

Later on, while I was paused to stuff some more literature into my carry bag, something was nagging at my subconscious quite strongly. I looked around to see what it was, and discovered I was standing next to a 5-foot tall poster that featured an A4 with the head off, and two mechanics working on it! The heading on the poster was "How to Launch a Career in Boating"!!!

Turns out that this was the booth for the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS). No one was there, but I did grab a flyer. Although they do teach a course that includes gasoline engine maintenance and repair, the A4 was not specifically mentioned. I got quit a kick out of seeing the old girl up there in the midst of all the modern high-tech boats and equipment!

Late model, delco distributor with points, original manifold, missing some studs, direct drive, exhausting on cylinder #1, intake on cylinder #2, #3 is about to fire, #4 just fired. I might be wrong, but I don't feel like thinking. What else?

Nice analysis Jim, except I think you got #1 & #2 backwards..if #4 is about to fire, #1 has to be the intake open (larger valve) & on #2, the exhaust is open (smaller valve). - you did say you weren't ready to think tho..me either.

I wonder what's so interesting at the flywheel end?

No doubt they're looking for the elusive forward oil seal.

Question

I had a brief, but energetic, conversation with Don and Brenda this evening about getting a booth at next year's show.

What do you guys think?

It's all about parts sales and usually show space isn't cheap. I think it boils down to how much you have to sell to justify the expense and time invested in moving displays to and from as well as hours invested in manning the booth. Breaking even shouldn't be the goal.

On the other hand, I worked the Long Beach SCMA sailboat show when I worked for the manufacturers. Our expenses were through the roof because besides floor space we had to truck the boats to and from the show and we usually had three or four models displayed. This included masts up, booms in place and sails bent on. The difference was if we didn't make a showing the industry rumors of our pending demise would result. Our absence would say more than our presence.

Not knowing what the space actually costs, this could be quite naive, but I was trying to convince him to bring a rebuilt engine and a new block, and focus primarily on pressing the flesh.
