Prop shaft coupling

I dropped in a newly rebuilt A-4 into my Catalina 30 over the weekend. There is a bit of a gap between the the output coupling at the back of the engine and the other half of the coupling on the prop shaft. The engine I removed is a 1977. The one I put in is a 1968 and seems slightly shorter overall... perhaps .375 inches. Should I simply slide the coupling on the prop shaft to close the gap? Not sure how easy that would be. May need a gear puller to move it. Anyone run into this type of issue? Thanks much!

The shaft itself should slide forward to close the gap. No need to loosen the coupling.

KevBYC, you probably actually knocked the "shaft back" when removing. Do check the shaft for sealing, moving back and forth on the packing the is not the way of it's "setting" as it's "setting" is rotational.

Easy to confirm Kev. With the coupling mated to the engine you should have a length of shaft showing between the strut and propeller roughly equal to 1 shaft diameter or in your case, about an inch.

Neil, exactly what I was thinking but I didn't have the cojones to ask if the boat was in our out of the water..now that I see CA, I realize possibly in since it is California...unless you are Russ in Alaska.
