Thumbs up New Products From Moyer Marine

Greetings:

We’d like to pass along a couple of important product announcements for your consideration:

Plumbing kit for installing early model “Dole” type thermostats:

This kit is designed to enable you to install a “Dole” thermostat system in the same configuration that we use when rebuilding an early model engine.

New aftermarket thermostat option for late model engines:

We are very pleased to introduce a new late model aftermarket thermostat option in our online catalog. The thermostat (a 140 degree thermostat sometimes referred to as the “Volvo” thermostat) is ready to order online or through our telephone sales representative (Ken) at 610-421-4436. Please note, as explained in our background information below, that this thermostat requires a ¼” spacer between the thermostat housing and the head. Note also that we offer convenient kits to facilitate installation of the spacer.

Background: We have known for quite some time that many of our late model customers were using this thermostat. It is commonly referred to as the “Volvo” thermostat because it was originally designed for use in one of the small Volvo marine engines. The thermostat maintains approximately 160 degrees in the late model bypass type of system (as does the 140 degree OEM thermostat). It has established a reputation of being very reliable, and it is quite a bit more affordable than the current OEM product.

Historically, the only downside to the “Volvo” thermostat was that it extends slightly deeper into the cylinder head than does the OEM thermostat, which means that it requires a spacer to raise it (and the thermostat housing) approximately ¼” off the top of the head. Adding a spacer has been easy enough, but until the development of our MMI kits, there has not been an easy method of dealing with the fact that after adding the spacer, the thermostat housing studs were too short to extend all the way through standard 9/16” head nuts – except to replace the studs with longer ones, which is not an easy job, given the limited access on most boats.

The MMI solution: To accommodate the thickness of the ¼” spacer, we have designed special stainless steel shoulder nuts to extend down between the stud and the thermostat housing to pick up an additional ¼” of threads on the studs.

The top of the holes in existing thermostat housings can easily be modified to accept the shoulder nuts by the use of a 17/32” drill bit included in our basic conversion kit. The only tool required for the modification beside those commonly found aboard boats is a standard 3/8” electric drill. A vise is convenient, but not essential.

MMI aftermarket thermostat kits:

The following kits have been designed to make converting to this aftermarket thermostat quite painless. A set of the general instructions included in the kits is attached:

1) Thermostat and conversion kit - late model (140 degree) (includes thermostat gasket) (aftermarket): This kit is for those of you who have a standard late model thermostat housing configuration, but lack the space (or desire) to replace your thermostat housing studs with longer ones. The kit enables you to modify your current thermostat housing to accommodate the special stainless shoulder nuts provided in the kit. The kit includes an aftermarket thermostat, a ¼” spacer, two gaskets, a 17/32” drill bit, and two special stainless shoulder nuts.

2) Thermostat and conversion kit with modified housing - late model (140 degree) (includes thermostat gasket) (aftermarket): This kit is the same as the basic conversion kit (above) except that it substitutes a factory modified bronze thermostat housing in place of the drill bit. This option is ideal for those of you who may already be planning to replace an old thermostat housing in the near future. You can convert to a new aftermarket thermostat and new thermostat housing at this same time, at less cost than an OEM thermostat.

3) Thermostat spacer kit - late model (aftermarket): This kit is the most cost-effective way to convert to the aftermarket thermostat. It is for customers who are in the process of removing and replacing their cylinder head for some other maintenance activity, or who would otherwise have an easy job of removing and replacing the thermostat housing studs. In this case, you simply need to replace the thermostat housing studs with manifold studs (which are ¼” longer) to accommodate the thickness of the required spacer and use standard 9/16” head nuts. The kit includes the aftermarket thermostat, two manifold studs, two thermostat housing gaskets, two standard 9/16” nuts, and a ¼” spacer.

4) Thermostat housing stainless steel shoulder nuts (set of 2) - late model (aftermarket): These are the stainless steel shoulder nuts used in the above kits. They are for those of you who may have dropped the original shoulder nuts into the bilge.

5) Thermostat housing (modified) - late model (aftermarket): This housing is the same as our standard late model bronze thermostat housing, with the stud holes modified to accept the special stainless shoulder nuts used in the above kits.
