Oil Leak from Paragon Reduction Gear
I just put my engine into the engine compartment and as soon as it was angled downward on the engine bed, a lot of oil started leaking out into the bilge, maybe a pint or more. It looks like it was coming from the narrowest part of the reduction gear, right behind the output coupling. After the leak stopped, the engine oil level was lower than the "Low" bar on the dipstick.
I noticed that the place where it was leaking is not painted like the rest, so I'm wondering if maybe it isn't put together properly? Is it possible to fix this? Last edited by clark800; 05-05-2018 at 05:57 PM. |

The spigot on the output flange fits into an oil seal. From your picture, it may be that the spigot isn't fully engaged with the seal - ie: the spigot has to go further into the reduction gear. Can you take another photo from the rear quarter that shows how far the shaft comes through the flange?
Of course, the seal could be trash. |

That's right, it wasn't in far enough, as the unpainted portion hinted. I tried to hammer it in further by placing a piece of wood on top and hammering it, but it didn't move at all. So I used a wheel puller to pull the output flange out (the nut was already removed). Looking down into the housing I noticed a washer that was out of alignment. I centered the washer with a flathead screw driver and put the output flange back in and it went in all the way with light hammering. I refilled the two quarts of oil that I lost and now there's no more leak!
