I have captured a Gremlin.

I found the Gremlin in my A4...it turned out to be me! I was testing my cylinders for compression, so I had the fuel tank turned off. (and the water.) With the fuel off I was pumping air into the system. I forced fuel through using a bulb to get the air out…she fires right up.
I had my temperature wire off, and when I hooked it back up, it read 260. I know it needs to be 140 to 160.
I know what I need to do, but, not in what order…any suggestions? Could it be the plug in thing that screws into the engine?

I don't know? When I got the boat in December of 09, the wire was broken off. Everything in the boat was broken. But she is alive, and getting better.

Mo, it feels great. The thermo is new. It has to be the water pump, rusted, or blocked waterways in engine, temp sending unit...or, what else? But, she is running. Starts with one short push of the starter.

Domenic-
You might want to update your thread "I will never trust my A4 again..."
Some of the newbees might get the wrong message if you don't follow up?
Just sayin'...

I love my A4...But, I will never trust any engine. My golden rule still stands, "Never sail into anything you can't sail out of." The newbees should learn that before they venture away from the dock.

Temp Issue

As for the temp issue;

Is there water ejecting out the rear
- seacock / water valve functioning properly / or debris on outside over the intake hole / or muscles etc living in your intake.
- impeller, if new did the engine run for a period of time without water through the impeller..they melt and disintegrate after a bit without the lube and cooling effect of water.
- strainer checked and clear
- debris in engine from previously failed impeller / rust etc.
- thermostat
- do you have a by-valve. could try closing it and see if you still have water exiting the rear.
- check your oil to ensure no water there also...would look whitish /grey / maybe bubbly if significant amount of water.

Is the engine actually hot to touch,
- is the head hot to touch when running.
- is / was the block hot, hot ...ticking etc as it cooled.

I know you have been on here absorbing info and will be all over this minor setback.

When did you last change the impeller? Beware of new impellers not pumping, something that's becoming more common with older pumps.

Domenic,
You didn't say whether the 260 F reading was with the engine running or just with the ignition turned on.
The temp sender is a variable resistor - high resistance when cold, lower resistance when hot. Since your gauge is pegging high, it sounds like the sender is shorted internally (or the temp wire is shorted to ground). Disconnect the wire from the sender and turn on the ignition - it should read cold. If not, there's a short in the wiring. Do you have (or can you borrow) a multimeter? At 70 F, the sender should read about 750 ohms. If zero, you know it's shorted internally (not uncommon) and needs replacement. The original SW sender is a 362AH with 1/2 NPTF threads. You may have more luck finding a 362AJ/362AN/362CZ with 3/8,1/4,1/8 inch threads - for which you'll need a bushing.
Hope this helps.

Al

Thanks guys. Yesterday with the engine running, I put the temp wire on the sender. One hand was rested on the head...head was warm, not hot.
Today, I turned the key on, (engine still off) engine cold. I put the temp wire on the sender. Guess what!...it read 260. Do I get a new sender, or check for a short?

Domenic,
You seem to need a new sender. If it read 260 with the wire off, it would be the wire shorted to ground. Since it only reads 260 with the wire connected, the short appears to be in the sender.
