Raw Water Strainer
I spent the weekend going over my engine. There is not a raw water strainer on the system. Can any one recommend one to get and where from.

Pat, At a minimum you want an external cage pick up. Next best plastic Sherwood sea strainer, next best plastic Vetus and best a bronze Perko or Groco.
If you have grass or algae blooms you want a good strainer. |

Keel,
I have an external cage on my thru hull that I'm planning on removing at the next haul-out and installing a raw water strainer instead. This time around I let my bottom paint go longer than I should have and developed growth inside the thru hull resulting in a blockage. I couldn't clear it from outside the hull due to the grate so I rodded it out from inside - hose removed and valve open. Even still, the external grate prevented me from doing as thorough a job as I wanted. I've always had cages on past boats but this experience has made me rethink the installation, now favoring a serviceable raw water strainer instead.

Neil, An external cage type also suffers from bottom paint build up restricting flow. If your fitted w/one make sure the power wash dude get's a six pack and instructions to blow out all your thru-hulls. Put old cardboard in the cockpit so the slime is not blown all over the deck. Local conditions dictate what type of strainer is needed. Powering through islands of grass or small pea sized algae and you want one with a big basket. Many a pump have been damaged by paint build up and marine growth. Mostly the mechanic confirms some flow, repairs the pump only to get a call on Monday that the engine overheated again after some use under full load.

Strainer?
Niel, looks lite a centrifugal defuser with a bird filter!
I too removed mine so I could clear from above when necessary and installed a strainer with easy access. Dave Neptune |

I should have inserted the hand crank for the full siren look. This was the only part that was missing from this early model unit. It runs well but I don't like the old carb's adjustable jet, it leaks a little.

I have a marelon (outside hull) strainer & thru-hull if someone wants it.
I bought the wrong size from Defender and waited too long to return it. I ended up keeping the stock C-30 bronze outside-hull-strainer for now, and haven't had any trouble with flow restrictions on the Chesapeake. keelcooler - I like your 'breather'
