Fuel tank sender descale

Picked up a 15 gallon Aluminum below deck tank in Annapolis today:
a little water and some slime on the bottom. would like to soak it with something prior to cleaning up the outside. Should this be painted? I can shoot 2part paint with my compressor and gun.

When I opened up the sending unit, I found the following scale build up:

What is the best way to remove all of this? The unit is labeled Medallion Industries. Should I look into an universal sending unit/gauge kit?

James

I'd drop $25 on a new one and be done with it.

good call. What are my chances that the moeller will bolt up? the tank is of unknown origin.

I'd say pretty fair.

Even if the holes don't match up it's an easy task to drill and tap new ones. Doing that allows you to relocate the sender if it benefits you. Be sure to avoid internal baffles for both the new hole and swingarm. The old hole can be covered with an aluminum plate and gasket.

One other thing. Before you install it in the boat and after you make any replacements or modifications, pressure test the tank to 3 psi for 30 minutes. That's the USCG standard for tank manufacturers. It's easier to deal with issues outside the boat.

Looks like a standard 5-hole pattern. When I replaced my tank a few years ago, the manufacturer went out of his way to point out that the holes in that mount are not uniformly distributed, and are that way on purpose so there is only one way for it to get mounted. I'm glad he said that because I would have assumed they were drilled wrong when I installed the float sensor a few days later.
