Crazy solution to overheating problem
This is kind of funny now that it is solved but I spent
a lot of time and money fixing it.... The start of the problem was that my muffler finally became clogged enough that the back pressure blew a hole in my rusted out exhaust manifold. I had welded up a new muffler system, bought a new manifold from Moyer and then had to make some special plumbing mods to connect the head to the new manifold. I fired it up and in ran much better but overheated quickly. I spend a lot of time diving and cleaning the hull entrance, replacing the old hoses to the water pump, replacing impellers, buying a new water pump from Moyer, etc. I finally took the copper pipe between the pump and engine and made soft hose insert where I could check the water flow in. It looked great! I then removed the fitting at the manifold and pressure fed water BACK through the engine.....that looked great too!!! Finally, I removed the fitting on the head going to the manifold. I didn't have gasket when I assembled it so used high temp red RTV. Poking around, I saw a red blob in the head. I used tweezers and pulled out a spherical 3/8 inch ball of red RTV that made perfect "check valve". Whenever I forced water back though the block it dislodged and water ran....when it was buttoned up this blob would get stuck in the head fitting!!! Two weeks and many $ later I am running cool!!!!!!!!!! |
